Howard Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have completed stellar seasons in Region 20 of the NJCAA's Division II and begin regional tournament play tonight, March 5, in the push for the national championship.
The men’s team powered to a regular season championship on Feb. 28, defeating CCBC Catonsville 83-81 on a dramatic buzzer-beater.
It was the second straight last-second thriller for the Dragons who defeated Chesapeake College four days prior 60-57. With a 23-6 overall record, the men’s team will enter the Region 20 tournament as the number one seed and will face Potomac College at 7 p.m. tonight at Cecil College.
The HCC women’s team enters the tournament with a 15-7 overall record and as the fifth seed. They will face Montgomery College on the Raptors’ home court tonight at 6 pm.
Coaches Eryn Barnes and Mike Smelkinson are candidates for coach of the year honors, while sophomores Mikiyah Mallett and Andrew Mills are competitive for regular-season individual player accolades.
We encourage Dragon Country to support our men’s and women’s teams as they represent Howard County throughout the postseason!
Go Dragons! ❤️
