Howard Community College (HCC) is making waves with its innovative Surgical Technologist Registered Apprenticeship program. Congratulations to the first cohort of apprentices who've completed their related instruction, a remarkable achievement marked by 100% employment and the enviable status of being 100% debt-free!
The second cohort, supported by MedStar, is already underway, ensuring a continuous flow of skilled professionals into the healthcare workforce.
HCC's commitment to providing top-tier education is evident in the strategic partnerships supporting these apprenticeships. The first cohort was funded by a combination of employer contributions and grants. The roster of esteemed employers includes the University of Maryland Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medical Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview, and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. These employers recognize the value of investing in the next generation of surgical technologists, contributing to the success of both the program and the aspiring professionals.
As the torch passes to the second cohort, 15 ambitious students began their apprenticeships last month through HCC’s partnership with MedStar. With a growing shortage of surgical technologists, these apprentices are not just earning a living but stepping into roles that directly address a critical workforce shortage. Their dedication to working full-time in hospitals while attending school full-time is inspiring and paves the way for a more robust and competent healthcare workforce.
From assisting in setting up operating rooms to preparing and transporting surgical patients, these apprentices work collaboratively with surgeons and nurses, gaining a holistic understanding of their role in patient care.
HCC is setting the stage for a future where surgical technologists are not just skilled professionals but the lifeblood of a resilient and vibrant healthcare system. Kudos to the Dragons who are shaping the future of healthcare!
