Howard Community College SGA Presents Immigration Policy Student Town Hall
The Student Government Association extends its gratitude to everyone who attended and participated in today’s Immigration Town Hall meeting. The event, held in the Back Galleria, provided an insightful and necessary discussion on the complexities of federal immigration policy and its direct impact on students and the broader community.
Our speakers broke down key issues, including the role of Congress and the President in shaping immigration policy, the limitations of due process for immigrants, and the implications of laws like the Laken Riley Act, which can fast-track deportation through the criminal justice process. These discussions highlighted the pressing need for continued awareness and advocacy.
We were honored to hear from Ms. Wanda Colon-Canales, Associate Director of Ambiciones, who shared her personal journey and the importance of education before action. She emphasized that our voices must be used to drive change and that advocacy must come from a place of knowledge and understanding. She powerfully stated, "Often, things that may seem insignificant to a citizen can have dire consequences for an immigrant."
The event reinforced the importance of informed discussion and collective action in addressing immigration policy challenges. We are committed to continuing these conversations and advocating for policies that uphold fairness and justice for all students.
Thank you again to our speakers, attendees, and everyone who contributed to this meaningful dialogue. Stay connected with SGA for future discussions and initiatives on issues that matter to our community.
