Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller to Keynote 2024 Howard Community College Commencement
Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller will salute more than 600 graduates of Howard Community College as the keynote orator for the 53rd HCC commencement exercises. The ceremony will be held on May 24 at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus beginning at 10 a.m.
It will be Miller’s first commencement speech at a community college since being sworn in as the state’s 10th lieutenant governor and the first immigrant elected to statewide office in January 2023. Miller’s address will be the second delivered to HCC graduates from the state’s highest leadership offices in two years, as Governor Wes Moore delivered the 2023 commencement keynote.
“We are honored to welcome Lieutenant Governor Miller and the wisdom she will share with our graduates,” said Howard Community College President Daria J. Willis. “Her example as a lawmaker and iconic figure in women’s history will empower our graduates to build their confidence in the bright futures that lie ahead for them all.”
Before she was elected lieutenant governor, Miller distinguished herself as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where she worked with her constituents to create legislation to invest in STEM education, streamline the regulatory process for small businesses, and champion working families, survivors of domestic abuse, and the environment.
A civil and transportation engineer with over 25 years of executive experience, Miller’s policy areas of focus include transportation, mental health, and equity in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics.
In March, she was inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame, which honors Maryland women whose lives and work are historically significant to the state’s health, economic, political, and cultural history.
Howard Community College was named among the nation's top two-year colleges by Niche, an online college selection and data resource for families. HCC ranked #92 among all two-year institutions and the top community college in the Baltimore metropolitan area. HCC enrolls nearly 22,000 credit and non-credit students of all ages from more than 104 countries, yielding more than $343 million in economic impact as one of Howard County's largest employers.
