Howard Community College Earns Eight Regional Public Relations and Marketing Awards
Howard Community College’s (HCC) Office of Public Relations and Marketing (PRM) earned eight awards in the 2024 District 1 Medallion Awards. The awards, presented by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), recognize outstanding achievement in communication and design from community and technical colleges. HCC was among the top three most awarded colleges in the program, earning three gold, four silver, and one bronze award for excellence in publications design, video production, graphic design, social media, and photography. PRM’s Dragon Media swept the Promotional Video-Long Form category earning bronze, silver, and gold accolades.
“This well-earned recognition perfectly demonstrates the exemplary work that PRM produces together as a team,” said Jarrett Carter Sr., vice president of external affairs, communications, and advancement. “The diversity in subject matter perfectly highlights the wide array of programing, services and supports in Dragon Country.”

The inaugural Annual Report from HCC President Dr. Daria J. Willis highlighted the college’s new apprenticeships and workforce development programs, growth in community and opportunity, and the continuous mission of providing pathways to success.
Gold, Promotional Video-Long Form: Ambiciones at Howard Community College – Presentation
The Ambiciones program is a supportive community designed to meet the unique needs of Hispanic/Latino students at HCC. Through interviews with Ambiciones alumni, prospective students learn how the program supports first generation students with specialized guidance and resources.

A fun, upbeat promotional video shows incoming students how Howard Community College can provide them with the skills and experiences needed to achieve career goals.
Bronze, Promotional Video-Long Form: Howard Community College’s “Drag[on] Extravaganza!” Celebrating LGBTQIA+ History
Affectionately known as a ‘Dragumentary,’ this behind-the-scenes documentary explores LGBTQIA+ history, drag culture, and the production of the college’s annual educational and entertaining drag show, “Drag[on] Extravaganza.”
Gold, Flyer (single or series): Nuestra Herencia Gallery Exhibition Card
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, HCC’s Ambiciones program and the Horowtiz Visual and Performing Arts Center hosted a gallery exhibition exploring the journeys of Hispanic and Latinx members of the college community. The rack card included images from the exhibition and complemented the design of other Hispanic Heritage Month items.

This Facebook post showcased the delicious offerings and exemplary service from Dragon’s Fire, HCC’s student-operated restaurant lab. Developed by students each semester, the Spring 2024 menu highlighted flavors from countries along the Pacific Rim.
Silver, Postcard (single or series): 2023-2024 Horowitz Center Season Postcard
The postcard is sent annually to promote the upcoming season of performances, exhibitions and concerts in the college’s Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center. Previous postcard designs earned Medallion recognition in 2023 and 2022.

Increasing access to college and completion among student parents has been a priority of Dr. Willis since her appointment as President.
The award winners were announced during a ceremony at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, as part of the NCMPR District 1 Conference. Margie Dunklee, Senior Graphic Designer; Tero Moberg, Art Director; and Patty Veri, Graphic Designer represented HCC at the conference.
A full list of District 1 finalists is posted on the NCMPR website. District 1 includes all Maryland community colleges as well as institutions from Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, and the United Kingdom.
Previous Medallion awards for HCC include six silver and one gold in the 2023 awards, and silver and bronze wins in 2022 for the Horowitz Center season postcard and presidential inauguration materials.
